Commenting on the election, Hill said, "I am not running against Ed Coon, I am running against Perrier."
The recall is a direct result of Coon's resisting the efforts of local residents to stop Nestle/Perrier from mining 720,000 gallons per day of Big Spring water and building a million square foot factory (23 acres under roof on wetland area). Perrier plans on running 200X2 diesel semi trucks through New Haven every day, 365 days a year.
The recall effort began two months ago on Sunday, July 9, 2000 at the Legion Hall in Briggsville when a group of residents met and decided to file the recall petition. The petition read:
Edward Coon has failed to support and represent the majority of the constituents of New Haven after the results of the recent referendum dated June 13, 2000.On June 13, town residents had voted 290 to 101 in favor of a referendum opposing the Perrier proposal. The referendum called on government officials to "oppose all use of water from aquifers of the town of New Haven, Adams County, Wisconsin, for commercial purposes and the building of the proposed water bottling plant in any area zoned for agriculture."
The recall petition was filed with the New Haven town clerk on July 10, 2000. At least 25 percent of the people who voted in the last presidential election had to sign the petition in order for it to be valid. This required 70 valid signatures for the recall. Three days later, on July 13, the Savin New Haven committee had collected 212 signatures for the recall and presented them to the town clerk.
