PLATTEVILLE, Wis.-Among Wisconsin's most important natural resources are the more than 12,600 rivers and streams in the state. Throughout Wisconsin, volunteers are working to monitor the health of their hometown streams and rivers. Monitoring is a fun way to enjoy the outdoors, and the data collected help local citizens understand how our land uses affect Wisconsin's water resources, contribute to scientific research, and can benefit local stewardship initiatives.
"Citizen volunteers play an essential role in monitoring, protecting and restoring the streams and rivers in Wisconsin," said Peggy Compton, UW-Extension Basin Educator for Natural Resources. "The Stream Monitoring Awards Program recognizes the efforts of these volunteers working in stream monitoring."

The Water Action Volunteers Program (WAV), University of Wisconsin-Extension and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) sponsor the Stream Monitoring Awards Program to promote awareness and participation in volunteer stream monitoring work in Wisconsin. The program recognizes individuals and groups for increased participation in stream monitoring, collecting stream data and sharing their knowledge of stream monitoring. Winners receive an engraved plaque and winners and nominees receive a certificate signed by the Secretary of the DNR.

Volunteer stream monitors are trained to measure important elements of stream health, such as dissolved oxygen, temperature and steam flow, which have a direct impact on aquatic life and water quality.

"People get involved in stream monitoring for a variety of reasons and in many ways," Compton said.  "Teachers use streams as outdoor classrooms, while citizens often monitor a stream close to home.  All of these efforts are important and are recognized through this awards program."

Volunteers or professionals who support volunteer stream monitoring can be acknowledged in six categories: Adult Volunteer, Student Volunteer, Group Effort, Teacher(s) or Classroom(s), Public Employee (contributes as a specified or voluntary part of his/her job duties), and Pioneer (instrumental in the development and implementation of volunteer stream monitoring in Wisconsin.) Previous winners may be nominated again, however, the nomination packet should only include work done since winning a previous award.

To nominate an individual or a group (self-nominations accepted), the nomination packet should include a completed two-page nomination form; one to three letter(s) of support from someone other than the nominator or nominee; and supporting information such as news articles of the nominee's work, copies of materials developed, and other awards received for volunteer stream monitoring efforts.

Winners of the Stream Monitoring Awards are chosen based on the following criteria: participation in a diverse range of activities; investment of substantial time in stream monitoring efforts; support of stream conservation (e.g., buffers, greenways); a record of sharing skills and information; and a commitment to developing relationships and partnerships in stream monitoring efforts.

Nominations can be obtained from Peggy Compton. Nominations must be submitted by Sept. 17, to Peggy Compton, UW-Extension Basin Educator, 258 Gardner Hall, 1 University Plaza, Platteville, WI  53818. For more information, contact Peggy Compton at 608-342-1633 or peggy.compton@ces.uwex.edu.
