RIVER DAMS HIGHLIGHTED
12/13/99
Madison -- Wisconsin's progressive leadership
in recognizing the economic, recreational and environmental value of a
healthy, free-flowing river has helped shape a new national outlook on
dam removal according to a recently released report entitled "Dam Removal
Success Stories: restoring rivers through selective removal of dams that
don't make sense." The report, released today by Trout Unlimited,
American Rivers and Friends of the Earth, celebrates Wisconsin's national
leadership in removing unsafe and uneconomical dams, including dams on
the Baraboo, Milwaukee and Willow Rivers. The report also documents
more than 465 dam removals across the nation. Wisconsin tops the
list with 73 dams removed in the past 30 years - over one-third more than
any other state.
