Northern Thunder has been running a series of display ads in area weekly papers for the past several months to educate the public about mining issues in our region. As Kennecott Copper and Rio Tinto Zinc continue their exploration and mineral leasing efforts, we are finding this an effective way to get our message out to people.
We have prepared a compilation of the ads in a tabloid format for distribution to interested groups and individuals. The ads are witty in tone (if we may be so bold), chocked full of factual information, and counter materials originally prepared by the mining company for circulation in western Wisconsin. This is part of our Truth in Advertising Campaign.
Many of the ads concern the Ladysmith copper/gold mine. This small open pit mine, which is now being closed after 5 years of operation, is being used by mining companies to show how they can "safely" mine in Wisconsin. The ads will provide you with needed information about this claim and others being made by the extraction industries.
