Earth Day
has come and gone. It’s but one day and its true mission is to inspire
us and others to act during the remaining 364 days of the year. In this
spirit, we offer a full calendar of opportunities in May. It’s our month
of Thunder. Here’s what’s coming on a planet near you:
-
Sat., May 3, 10 am.
We complete our move to our new offices at 312 E.
Madison. We need to unpack our boxes, erect shelves, arrange desks, file
cabinets, chairs, etc. And we need some plants to brighten the south facing
street windows. Help brighten and spruce up the office. It should probably
take only a 2-3 hours, with many hands making light work. Later that day,
at 7:30 pm, Lynn Paloski invites us up to her place to socialize. She will
prepare food for us and any attending should bring something to drink.
Lynn lives at 4726 Puttor Dr., off of Golf Rd.
-
Sat., May 10, 10-4 pm.
The 5th Annual Chippewa Valley River Clean-up
will be held by Northern Thunder. This year we are moving to Big Falls
Park for a clean-up of the park and river environs. Registration begins
at 9 am in the west, or lower, parking lot off of Co. Hwy Q. Wear appropriate
clothes (shoes, gloves, etc.) for rooting about the shoreline. Canoes and
kayaks are welcome to work the waters. Many of us have frolicked at the
park over the years, here’s a chance to put something back. Call Gigi at
835-5344 for more details.
-
Sun., May 11, noon.
Annual Mothers Day Protest at the Project ELF facility
in the Chequamegon National Forest near Clam Lake. For more details, call
715-472-4185.
-
Mon., May 12, 2:30 - 6:30 pm.
The state Assembly will hold its only northern hearing on the mining
moratorium bill in Ladysmith at the new public library. This is our
one chance to let state legislators hear our thoughts on the hottest environmental
issue in Wisconsin. Come voice your concerns. The bill passed the Senate
29-3 in March. Let’s help push it through the Assembly. If you can’t go,
write your Assembly rep’s or you can call them on the legislative hotline
800-362-9472. For more details, call Will at 839-7731.
-
Wed., May 21, 7 pm. NT regular
meeting at new offices, 312 E. Madison, refreshments at 6:30. Bring a friend.
-
Many of our members have been help
helping produce a new TV program on the local Public Access Channel. It’s
called TV Notion and it explores unreported and under-reported news
and arts/music in our community from a progressive perspective. To see
this month’s show, tune into PAC on Fri., May 2 at 10 am; Sat., May 10
at 5 pm; and Thur., May 22 at 2pm. We really need a few more souls to help
producte this local program. If you’re interested, call Michelle at 834-4837
or Marty and Rita at 832-0527.

Native American Treaty Rights
have become an issue in Minnesota. Many people from the Eau Claire area
became involved with witnessing and Native American Treaty rights earlier
this decade. If you are interested in witnessing again or would like an
informational session sponsored in Eau Claire to learn more about what’s
going on, call our NT office and leave a message indicating so. The number
is 834-9276. If enough people respond, we will offer an informational workshop
in Eau Claire. People can also go the Twin Cities for witness training.
