WSN Priority Issues which Impact North East Wisconsin

Water Regulation & Withdrawals:  The Wisconsin Stewardship Network (WSN) supports enacting legislation that sets standards for water withdrawals, promotes efficient water use, and improves the integrity of the Wisconsin’s water supply. See the WSN page about this issue at: http://www.wsn.org/water_regulation/index.html

Factory Farming: The WSN supports full implementation of the Clean Water Act’s goal of zero discharge of animal wastes and excess nutrients to ground and surface waters from livestock facilities. See the WSN page about this issue at:
http://www.wsn.org/factoryfarm/factoryfarmpage.html

The proposed Arrowhead-Weston Transmission Line: The WSN has designated the proposed 345,000 volt transmission line across northern Wisconsin as a priority issue.  The line would run from Duluth (Arrowhead) to Wausau (Weston). See the WSN page about this issue at http://www.wsn.org/transmission_line/index.html

Forest Fragmentation: The WSN will promote public policies that prevent forest fragmentation by producing a database of critical private lands to help land trusts better target areas for conservation programs, defending the integrity of our last remaining natural areas in the forest plans for state and federal forests, urging our elected officials to support the Forest Legacy & Stewardship programs, and working with concerned citizens to protect our public forests from ATV abuse. See the WSN page about this issue at: http://www.wsn.org/forest_habitat/index.html

Other Important Environmental Issues in North East Wisconsin

Nuclear Power and Waste: Wisconsin legislators are currently considering legislation - AB555 that would revoke the ban on new nuclear power plants in Wisconsin. If built, any new nuclear plants would require places for nuclear waste storage. The Wolf River Batholith area in Central Wisconsin has been designated as an appropriate location for nuclear waste storage. Clean Wisconsin (Formerly Wisconsin's Environmental Decade) is working on this issue. Be sure to sign their petition No more nuclear waste in Wisconsin!
