Policy Position on Highway 131 Reconstruction:

We support development of a unique a scenic highway, that would serve the transportation needs of  Kickapoo Valley residents.  This project could serve as a national model for rural highway development through an ecologically sensitive area.  The Highway should be upgraded for local use, enhancing tourism and improving safety.  The reconstruction should follow the existing roadbed.  An absolute priority should be given to minimizing the impact on the scenic value and tranquility of this narrow valley.  We strongly object to the intended use as a major transportation throughway for commercial trucks.  A 55 MPH design is incompatible with maintaining these priorities.
