Comments:

The very notion of “motorized areas” simply conflicts with Best Forest Management Practices. There are appropriate uses for ATVs-emergency personnel, farmers, ranchers and the like. These vehicles, by their very advertised nature, destroy land, churn streambeds, transport exotic plant species, consume a limited petroleum resource, pollute air, and, even with their new engines, spread noise pollution.

Since environmental tourism is emerging as far more lucrative than timber sales, it makes good economic sense to preserve the natural beauty of our region’s unique forests. In upcoming years, tourists are most likely to seek wilderness recreation opportunities in those areas which remain in pristine and natural condition.

I want to see the current Forest Plan Revision process result in a more sustainable future for our wild areas. This involves rethinking the emphasis on commercial logging on National Forest lands, giving better protection to rare and endangered species, and creating more Designated Wilderness Areas which are completely free from resource extraction and motorized vehicles.

Sincerely,
