A short video describing mercury pollution of Wisconsin's fish and waters has won the Award of Distinction in three categories at The Communicator Awards, an international competition honoring excellence in visual communication.

The video, "Alex in Wonderland: Mercury Poisoning in Wisconsin's Lakes", follows the story of a young Wisconsin lad who loves to fish and eat what he catches.  One day Alex lands a large walleye and discovers that the fish is not safe to eat because its flesh is tainted with toxic mercury.  Disturbed by this discovery, Alex seeks answers from his family and other sources.  Eventually, he takes action and requests that the governor make powerplants control their release of toxic mercury into the environment.

The 13 minute video was produced by Wisconsin's Environmental Decade.  It includes interviews with former DNR chief George Meyer and anglers from some of the state's most prominent fishing organizations.  The discussions focus on the health problems posed by mercury pollution (especially for children and expectant mothers) and offers direction for state policy to help reduce mercury contamination.
