Voters Back DNR Independence And Restoration Of Public Intervenor
4/25/02

Citizens attending this April's statewide Conservation Congress once more overwhelmingly supported resolutions calling for the return of DNR independence and the restoration of the Public Intervenors Office, according to Paul Mongin, the WSN's point person on the issues.

On DNR independence, 6448 voted in favor of the matter with 238 opposing it.  Those backing the restoration of the Public Intervenor totaled 5717 with 376 voting against it.  The totals were tallied from Wisconsin's 70 counties.  The voting results parallel those from previous years before the Conservation Congress.

The demise of DNR independence and the loss of the Public Intervenor in 1995 were events that sparked the formation of the Wisconsin Stewardship Network.  The WSN continues to work for and support the reversal of these setbacks to natural resource policy in Wisconsin.
