The Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest Master Plan

5/22/03

The Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, according to the DNR:

"encompasses more than 220,000 acres in parts of Vilas, Oneida and Iron Counties.  The area's rich land and water resources support many plants and animals, including rare and endangered species like the wood turtle, bald eagle and Cooper's hawk.  Annually, over two million visitors come to the forest seeking experiences ranging from highly developed recreation areas to remote solitude.  They enjoy hunting, fishing, wildlife watching, nature study, mountain biking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, boating, canoeing, and countless other pursuits."

The state is preparing its Master Plan to establish future usage patterns and guidelines.  ECCOLA has prepared a wide-ranging series of public comments on the DNR's favored plan alternative that you might find useful in preparing public comments.

You can view ECCOLA's comments by clicking here.

The public, according to the DNR's Dennis Leigh, now has until June 16 to file their remarks.  You can send your comments to leithd@dnr.state.wi.us.
