more on factory farms

Protect Wisconsin's waterways and public health from polluting factory farms.  Send an email to the Department of Commerce using the WISPIRG web form.

BACKGROUND

Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group (WISPIRG) is working to protect Wisconsin's waterways and drinking water from agriculture pollution.  Large-scale factory farms aren't just squeezing out family farms--they're also polluting Wisconsin's environment.

Animal manure is poisoning our water, threatening our health, and contaminating our lake and river wildlife.  Contaminants from manure, like cryptosporidium and nitrates, can make people sick, cause spontaneous miscarriages and even cause death in infants and other sensitive populations.  Manure and other agriculture contaminants, when they get into our lakes and rivers, can kill fish and other aquatic life.

In recent years, state agencies and the Governor have worked to attract large-scale, out of state animal factories by using Wisconsin tax dollars to provide grants and low-interest loans.  But larger animal factories bring more manure, more disposal problems, and more threats to our environment and health.  Right now, the Wisconsin Department of Commerce is offering an
$850,000 low-interest loan to the owner of an industrial dairy in New Mexico to build the second largest dairy in the state--a facility that would house almost 3,000 cows.

Send an email to Department of Commerce Secretary Brenda Blanchard, letting her know that you don't want your tax dollars spent on attracting polluting animal factories to Wisconsin.
