Douglas County Denies Transmission Line Access

Company sought access
to county forest land

On January 28, the Douglas County Forestry Committee unanimously denied a request from Minnesota Power for access to county property in the Douglas County Forest.

The request was made so that the company could do "survey, borings and endangered species searches" on the proposed route for the Arrowhead Weston Line.  The six committee members made their decision with little discussion.  They cited the resolution passed in October 1999 by the full County Board (17-4) against the proposed 345,000 volt Arrowhead-Weston transmission line across northern Wisconsin as the reason for their action.

Three Minnesota Power executives, present for the meeting, left after the decision with little comment.  About a dozen SOUL members were on hand for the meeting.  It is apparent that the Douglas County Board is going to stand by its resolution and fight the Arrowhead Weston Line.
