LYNNE DEPOSIT EYED AGAIN FOR DEVELOPMENT
Willow Flowage Site Captures Interest of Another Mining Co.
Sharpe Resources Mining Company has contacted the Oneida County Forestry
Board in order to talk to Oneida County about the mineral rights to the
Lynne deposit. The ore body is located one mile from the Willow Flowage
and near Rhinelander. It was abandoned last year by Noranda Corporation,
a Canadian mining company. (Noranda has refused to pay a bill of
$300,000 to the state DNR for work the agency performed related to Noranda's
exploration and permit work.)
Sharpe sent a letter to the county explaining that they believe there
is more exploration to be done in the area to make a real valuable mine
work there. At the January 15th Oneida County Forestry Committee
meeting, county supervisors heard from members of ECCOLA (Environmentally
Concerned Citizens of Lakeland Areas) and other concerned citizens that
the County could not legally allow drilling in the wetlands surrounding
the ore body, according to Wisconsin's Shoreland Wetland Law, NR115.
The supervisors have tabled Sharpe's offer until Oneida County passes
a comprehensive mining ordinance.
