CITIZENS FOR A BETTER ENVIRONMENT
Women's Health Educational Materials Now Available!

The Women's Health and the Environment Network is composed of Wisconsin women from varied socioeconomic backgrounds, professions and organizations. WHEN is exploring possible environmental factors related to women's health problems in our state. Our current focus is on the unexplained high rate of breast cancer in our state. In the future, we intend to address other forms of cancer and illness affecting men, women and children which may be related to environmental factors

Learn how the environment and women's health are connected!
Whether you are a breast cancer activist, a health care provider, a public official or a citizen concerned about yourself and your family, these resources can help ensure better health for you and your community.

• "The Environment: A Piece of the Breast Cancer Puzzle" Video
This video is based on WHEN's conference in which scientists and professionals from across the nation  presented evidence that environmental toxins may be contributing to rising rates of breast cancer. The video provides compelling and easy to understand information on how toxins may cause breast cancer, where these toxins are found, and useful suggestions on how we can avoid harmful toxins in our lives (17.5 minutes, $10).

• "Women's Health & the Environment—What's the Connection?" Slide Show
This slide show explains how a broad range of women's health problems that are on the rise may be linked to exposure to chemicals in our environment and in products we use every day. It also touches briefly on a few of the male health problems possibly connected to environmental toxins. It suggests ways that individuals can avoid harmful toxins in their daily lives (20 minutes, $15 rental plus $75 deposit).

• “Reducing Your Exposure: Avoiding Hormone Disrupters” Fact Sheet
This two-page fact sheet provides handy guidelines for avoiding products which contain hormone disrupters and suggests ways to reduce these chemicals in your communities (10 cents).

. DID YOU KNOW?
• Breast cancer rates have increased about 2% a year from 1980 until recently.
• 1 in 8 women will experience breast cancer in her lifetime.
• Only 25-30% of breast cancer cases can be explained by known risk factors, such as family history, lifestyle and diet.
• 70-75% of breast cancer cases have none of these "official" risk factors and may be related to environmental exposure to toxins. I'd like to get involved!
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
• Join WHEN’s Education and Outreach Task Force  which develops resources to educate Wisconsin citizens about the environment’s toxic effects on women’s health through the distribution of published material and the development of educational exhibits and videotapes.
• Join WHEN’s Research and Statistics Task Force which advocates for improved data and research in Wisconsin, and monitoring breast cancer studies to suggest future action.
•  Help get the word out. You can invite WHEN to speak to a group or bring a display to an event. Additionally, you can help spread the word to others by presenting WHEN information yourself.

Please consider getting involved in these volunteer task forces. We need you!
