Tribal Awards Sculpture Finished
Minnesota native American artist Jeff Savage has finished his sculpture for the Forest County Potawatomi and Mole Lake Chippewa. The WSN commissioned sculpture will be given to tribal representatives to thank and honor of the tribes for their purchase of the mine site. The presentation will be made Friday night, Feb. 6, at the WSN 2004 Annual Conference.
The
oak sculptures feature a heron and a wolf. The wolf is a symbolic
protector of the earth, while the heron represents the animals dependent on
clean water. The individual animal sculptures each have a similar curved
shape that forms a heart between them, and each shares half of the circular
base, symbolizing the two tribes working together to purchase the Crandon Mine.
The black circular stone near the top of the bases is made from a
piece of the mine's original core sample from 25 years ago. The red material is
pipestone from a native American quarry.
The Wisconsin Stewardship Network is seeking contributions from conservation and environmental groups, business owners, or any interested individuals to help underwrite this award. The contributions will be engraved on the statue bases and acknowledged on a tile in the new Mole Lake tribal administration building.
The sculpture will be given to the tribes by Gov. Jim Doyle.
