Victory for Rivers - River Alliance plays key role in landmark settlement

A conceptual agreement has been reached on major issues in the relicensing of eight hydroelectric dams in northeast Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Pennisula. The goal of the proceedings was to balance issues in an agreement prior to the start of the formal federal relicensing process. Rather than using a traditional and more adversarial approach, this proactive approach allows parties to work collaboratively. The River Alliance of Wisconsin and the Michigan Hydro Relicensing Coalition have been representing citizens interests in the negotioations with federal public agencies and Wisconsin Electric Power Co. Elements of the agreement include improved fishery habitat and recreational opportunities; fish barriers to reduce fish kills by turbines, improved boat launches, fishing, camping and barrier-free river access; and removal of three dams - including one on the Pine, a state wild and scenic river.

This marks the first time in the nation that a collaborative agreement has been reached prior to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's relicensing process. The River Alliance would like to see more dam owners use this approach which can benefit natural resources and dam owners.

The announcement marks the formal beginning for public comment on the Applicant Prepared Environmental Assessment. Public meetings will be scheduled. For information contact theRiver Alliance at: 608/257-2424.
