Decade's Election Primer

We know you can think for yourself, but we wanted to let you know who we like and why. Including the Clean 16 (see page 6), there are a total of 32 legislators who received a grade of "A" in our voting record. All of these individuals have worked hard and deserve your support.

Below are seven races in particular which we feel deserve special attention from conservation-minded voters. Whatever your choice, the important thing is - VOTE - September 10th and November 5th.

10th SD - Alice Clausing

Alice is the real thing. Elected to office in 1992, she ran to do something about Tainter Lake, a lakecontaminated by run-off in her NW district. A Clean 16 winner for each of her two terms in office, she was elected "Rookie of the Year" in 1995-96. We can't say enough good things about her dedication to protecting Wisconsin's environment.

30th SD - Barbara Lawton

We endorse Barbara Lawton in the primary September 10 and think she will be a good candidate to run against incumbent Gary Drzewiecki in the general election. Drzewiecki, who consistently has one of the lowest environmental voting records in the Senate, is the co-author of the radically anti-environmental takings legislation. We like Lawton and think she will do a better job of representing Green Bay's public interest.

8th SD - Randy Nash

We endorse Randy in the primary September 10 and think he's the best to take on Senator Alberta Darling November 5th. Randy will represent the districts interest in protecting Wisconsin's reputatoin for a clean and safe environment. Darling outraged many of her constituents last year when she turned a deaf ear to over 1000 letters and postcards she received asking that she vote to save the Public Intervenor's Office. She didn't and that cost us the Public Intervenor's Office.

40th AD - Bill Lorge

In 1995-96, Bill Lorge had the highest environmental voting record among his fellow Republicans. Even better, he isn't afraid to vote his conscience. Voted Conservationist of the Year by the Conservation Congress in 1992, Lorge has a history of representing conservation interests. We support Lorge in the primary.

34th AD - Carolyn Parker

Parker is a teacher and the former President of ECCOLA (Environmentally Concerned Citizens of the Lakeland Area), a grassroots group based in Vilas County. She is an ardent opponent of the proposed Exxon mine and will fight for Wisconsin's most precious investment - our water.

79th AD - Rick Skindrud

For two sessions running, Rep. Skindrud has consistently had among the lowest voting records in the Assembly. In this race, voters have a choice of several strong challengers with good conservation credentials.

Dane County Clerk - Joe Parisi

Although we don't usually endorse in county races, we couldn't help ourselves here. Joe is one of the nicest, hardest working candidates we know. A former legislative staffer, Joe wants to do something about campaign finance reform in Dane Couty. He doesn't have to convince us. Polluter PAC's have too much sway over our elected officials and we think cleaning up the process is a good idea. Go Joe!
